On Tuesday 20 May, COK hosted the annual Free-Market Road Show, for the sixteenth time, once more at Zagreb School of Economics and Management.<\/p>\n

Tarrifs, inflation and productivity<\/h3>\n

The topics were: \u201cTariffs \u2013 are they ever useful?\u201d, \u201cThe Return of Inflation \u2013 can price controls ever work?\u201d and \u201cHigher productivity or mass migration \u2013 which is the path to economic growth?\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite a broadly similar starting point, that of Austrian economics and the writings of Friedrich Hayek, there were differences of emphasis in the speeches of the panellists, which made for a good discussion.<\/p>\n

From Croatia, came Andrej Grubi\u0161i\u0107 (on inflation\/price controls), Vedrana Pribi\u0107evi\u0107 (also on inflation\/price controls), Damir Novotny (tariffs), Branko Rogli\u0107 (also tariffs) and Mate \u0106uri\u0107 (demographics \u2013 i.e., the third panel).<\/p>\n

From Britain, came Eamonn Butler (inflation\/price controls) and Keith Miles (trade) and \u2013 depending on one\u2019s definition<\/a> \u2013 me (Robin Harris \u2013 productivity\/immigration). From Bulgaria came Alexander Tokarev (immigration).<\/p>\n

16th Free-Market Road Show brought international perspectives<\/h3>\n

Bringing international perspectives to bear, and trying to balance theoretical and practical questions, seems a good way to conduct useful discussion about Croatia\u2019s economic problems and prospects \u2013 something which is sadly a rarity in public discourse here.<\/p>\n

While the participants either went home or enjoyed a convivial lunch, Mate \u0106uri\u0107 departed for Brussels to moderate, the next day, a discussion on the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n
