The theme was titled \u201cEighty Years after the End of the War in Europe: Liberation or Enslavement?\u201d The videos from the conference were recently made available via COK&#8217;s YouTube channel. Below you will find all the recordings in chronological order.<\/p>\n<h3>Videos from the conference Liberation or Enslavement, Tuesday afternoon<\/h3>\n<p>On Tuesday, 8th July, Branka Lozo from the New Direction management board was the first to address the attendees, drawing attention to the importance of these topics for contemporary Croatia.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Branka Lozo | Liberation or Enslavement? - Eighty Years after the End of the War in Europe\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PtRH_m1BHSY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Following her address, the Chairman of COK, Robin Harris, delivered the first presentation, titled &#8220;What the Communist Revolution in Yugoslavia Brought About.&#8221; In it, described the repressive measures adopted, despite earlier promises made by the Partisan leadership.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Robin Harris | Liberation or Enslavement? - Eighty Years after the End of the War in Europe\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ek-SVjHKkjY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second presentation was delivered by Mario Jareb Drugo je izlaganje odr\u017eao Mario Jareb from the Croatian Institute of History. He showed how Stalin had been accorded enormous veneration, in the years before Yugoslavia was ejected from Cominform in 1948.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"\u201cWith Tito and Stalin, Two Heroic Sons of the People\u201d | Mario Jareb\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8hPHgL-LJYg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Igor Omerza, a writer on security issues from Slovenia, then delivered a lecture on the Party\u2019s secret police structure and operations there between 1941 and 1990.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"VOS, OZNA and UDBA \u2013 Communist Secret Police in Slovenia (1941\u20131990) | Igor Omerza\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rr_cQ-dwxPE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Experience outside Yugoslavia<\/h3>\n<p>The focus of discussion now shifted to outside Yugoslavia. Arunas Bubnys, from the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania, described the Communist-Soviet terror in Lithuania between 1944 and 1953.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Communist-Soviet Terror in Lithuania (1944\u20131953) | Ar\u016bnas Bubnys\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G8p5aHOfLVM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Grzegorz Wo\u0142k, from the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland, described the Polish experience of Communist revolution. He mentioned that, between 1939 and 1941, more than 300.000 Polish citizens were deported deep into the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Communist Revolution in Post-War Europe: A Polish Perspective | Grzegorz Wo\u0142k\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NujrA5JMqag?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second of our guests from Lithuania, Rasa \u010cepaitien\u0117, from the Lithuanian Institute of History, discussed in her lecture, \u201cConsidering and confronting memories of the Communist Past\u201d, the different approaches of the former Soviet Republics to their own history.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Considering and Confronting Memories of the Communist Past | Rasa \u010cepaitien\u0117\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QPK6ec85NEE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first day ended with a panel discussion titled &#8220;The Reality of Communism&#8221;. He discussed the significance of the observations of the famous British (Catholic) novelist, Evelyn Waugh, about the revolutionary aims and brutal behaviour \u2013 particularly towards the Church \u2013 of Tito\u2019s Partisans.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Evelyn Waugh and the Partisans | Mario Jareb\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RHDAqKnh__I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Continuing the same theme, Jure Kri\u0161to, retired scholar from the Croatian Institute of History, spoke about the persecution of the Catholic Church in Croatia. Dr Kri\u0161to concentrated on the immediate aftermath of the Partisan\u2019s entry into Zagreb in May 1945 and the role of (Blessed Cardinal) Alojzije Stepinac.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Persecution of the Church in Croatia | Jure Kri\u0161to\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bBLhb5pzWzo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the third presentation, Robin Harris described the actions of the Party in Dubrovnik after its occupation by the Partisans on 18 October 1944. The case of Dubrovnik is especially revealing of how the new authorities acted with a mixture of brutality and subtlety to destroy their opponents<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Liquidations and Terror in Dubrovnik | Robin Harris\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ifHnXVOcPBs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hrvoje \u010capo moderated the following panel discussion in which attention continued to be focused on the Party\u2019s dealings with the Church. The participants were Mario Jareb, Jure Kri\u0161to and Robin Harris.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Communist Aims and Methods | Panel moderated by Hrvoje \u010capo\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4YseKLt1f5U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Third round of presentations: treatment of minorities by the Communist Revolutionaries<\/h3>\n<p>After a coffee break, the third block of presentations turned the conference\u2019s attention to the treatment by the Communist Revolutionaries and their agents of minorities singled out for persecution \u2013 and in some cases extinction. Bo\u017ee Vuku\u0161i\u0107, from the Way of the Cross Association, and formerly secretary of the Council for Affirmation of the Post-War Victims of the Communist System Killed Abroad, discussed Yugoslav state terrorism against the Croatian emigration.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Yugoslav State Terrorism Against Croatian Emigrants | Bo\u017ee Vuku\u0161i\u0107\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qbP2PjhHksc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Zlatko Hasanbegovi\u0107, from the Ivo Pilar Institute (and former Minister of Culture) then discussed the Communist repression of the Islamic Community, taking Zagreb as a case study.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Repression of the Islamic Community \u2013 The Zagreb Case Study | Zlatko Hasanbegovi\u0107\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/txXElfMAxOI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the third presentation, Marino Manin discussed the still internationally controversial topic of the fate of the Italians at the end of the Second World War (1943 and then 1945 and later). The Italian minority were persecuted in both Dalmatia and Istria, and subsequently many thousands fled.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Fate of the Italians in Dalmatia and Istria | Marino Manin\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZSDD4NxfeSI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Vladimir Geiger, from the Croatian Institute of History, was unable to attend but his paper \u2013 The Fate of the German Minority in Croatia and Yugoslavia at the End of the Second World War and the Immediate Post-War Period \u2013 was read out by Hrvoje \u010capo.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Fate of the German Minority in Croatia and Yugoslavia | Vladimir Geiger\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iGvgPMQTV0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hrvoje \u010capo then moderated a panel discussion in which all these themes were further investigated and comparisons drawn.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Victims of Communism | Panel moderated by Hrvoje \u010capo\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aEpVo4wmcJs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>The Bleiburg massacre and mass graves<\/h3>\n<p>The fourth and last block of lectures concentrated on the Bleiburg massacre and mass graves. Mitja Ferenc, an historian from Slovenia, but most importantly in this context Slovenia\u2019s most distinguished expert concerning the location, probing, exhumation and analysis of mass graves, delivered the first lecture &#8220;Liquidations and mass graves in Slovenia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Liquidations and Mass Graves in Slovenia | Mitja Ferenc\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mQknKLKfWgg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Amir Obho\u0111a\u0161, an historian at the Croatian State Archives, continued the same theme by reporting on the sites of mass graves which have recently been investigated on Croatian soil. He described and showed details of the exhumations done at Prudnice (Brdovec), Kri\u017eanov jarak (Macelj), Jazovka and, most recently, at Sveta Nedelja.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Consequences of Bleiburg: Mass Graves in Croatia | Amir Obho\u0111a\u0161\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U1zgy3V7qio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hrvoje Mandi\u0107, an historian from the University of Zagreb, discussed OZNA Repression in Herzegovina in 1945.
